The interior design alphabet series marches on. ‘U’ presented a challenge. Suggestions included ; Universal Design (that would be a series of posts, not just one), and up lighting. Having just had the opportunity to work with unfinished wood furniture for a S Interior Design client, that was chosen as the topic to blog about.
Starting with an unfinished piece of furniture opens up a world of options as to how to proceed. Using unfinished furniture is a great way to achieve a truly unique design outcome. You can stain the wood, you can paint the wood, you can color wash the wood, add decorative stencils…..the options are almost endless!
It can seem a bit scary…What if it turns out badly? What if it screws up the furniture?
For those brave folks, Here are links to articles on finishing unfinished furniture:

Design is a process. Candace Olsen said ‘Good Design Takes Time’. It is true! Sometimes you can make a notable change to the interior design of a space pretty quickly, but often the design plan needs to be developed, executed and adjusted to get it just right. So, while we all are trained to get everything quickly, I call it the ‘microwave society syndrome’, take a deep breath and invest time into the planning process to get the best end result.
Below is a recent example of a project S Interior Design is working on. You will see from the before and after photos the room has undergone a transformation. New paint colors, new seating, accent tables, area rugs, window treatments and more. Perhaps most different design element is the fireplace. The fireplace is a focal point in the room and before it had a faux paint technique in muddy brown tones that read as ‘Tuscon’. The new homeowners, wanted to inject color and an ethnic style element into the design. First we painted it, then we chose tiles to place on the hearth and the surround.
Here are photo collages showing other transformational design elements in the great room and adjoining eat-in kitchen area.
Is it within reach? Is it hard to do? Not with the proper resources including a local interior designer to work with. In Scottsdale, Arizona S Interior Design designs custom seating with Pacific Furniture as a design partner.
When it comes to your seating furniture pieces you should not compromise comfort for looks, or looks for comfort. Pick your size, pick your cushion firmness, pick your fabric, pick the leg style and stain.
Make it unique, make it just right for you and the room it is going to live in.
Take a look at the attached video How to Design Custom Furniture and consider going the custom route the next time you need a new sofa or chair.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of having my hair professionally cut and styled. My hairdresser of 12 years recently re-located to a brand new salon space. It is rather petite in size as only 2 stylists work there. I am so enjoying the colors and design elements in the new space, one in particular.
There are 2 of these amazing lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling. I got to ‘study them’ as I lay head tilted back as my hair got washed and conditioned. I couldn’t stop thinking about them and wanted to share.
