Transform a Plain Wall : Drab to Fab!

April 6, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky Leave a Comment

Spring has awoken the creative juices in me and I wanted to share some ideas for transforming a plain wall into a focal point in room.  With all of these great options there are simply no excuses for boring walls!

We are all familiar with paint, but have you tried using it in a new way lately?  Stencils are back and better than ever.  Over scale stencil work on a wall can end up looking like expensive wall paper if done correctly.  If you don’t have the ambition to do an entire wall, you can use a stencil at the chair rail height (36” -42”) or at the crown molding height where the wall meets the ceiling.    Check out this web site to find virtually any stencil imaginable
http://www.stencil-library.com/docs/catalog.htm.

Not handy with a paint brush?  No problem.  Wall decals are not just for kids rooms anymore.  The ‘artwork’ subjects range from faux trees, to abstract modern art and everything in between.  Wall decals are cost effective, easy to use and removable if you get tired of them.

Wallpaper is back!  Not the stuff from Grandma’s house but amazing options to fit any décor style are available.  There are even textural wall coverings that make you feel like you are connecting to the great outdoors. Many papers are now printed on ‘easy hang easy strip’ substrates.

You can even get a scenic mural

Intrigued By Flat Velveteen Hangers

March 1, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky 7 Comments

I have been contemplating those sexy thin velvet covered hangers for months now.  So tempting in their vast array of color options.  What is causing me to hang back (no pun intended).  Why don’t I take the leap and just by $30 worth and effectively change the look and functionality of my poor overcrowded closet?

Not that long ago,  I proudly invested in a slew of wooden hangers (“NO more wire hangers as Mommy Dearest yelled!)  I kept a cache of plastic hangers to dry the delicate clothes on, but any wire hanger was expunged from my husband, son’s and my closet spaces.

Is it fear of choosing the wrong color or combination of colors?  No, that can’t be it, I am a designer and colors do not scare me.  Oh, I think I know what it is….it is the daunting tax of re-hanging all of those clothes.  Can I just close my eyes, click my heels and magically make it all happen for me without lifting a finger?

Okay, I will start slow, I will replace the hangers in the guest bedroom closet so at least my guests will enjoy the beauty and functionality of the ‘velveteen hangers’.

Black Crystal Chandelier

February 28, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky 3 Comments

A crystal chandelier in and of itself can be a dramatic statement in a room.  When you take it up a level by using a mix of clear and black crystal you can begin to make a truly glamorous,  statement.  Take a look at some fabulous examples below.   One of these beauties is going in a guest bedroom bathroom to complete a Hollywood Regency inspired make over.

How To Set Up Your Guest Room For Your Holiday Guests

November 21, 2009 by Suzanne Lasky Leave a Comment

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is my favorite holiday.  It is warm and inviting from the colors used on tabletops, the scents of fall and the foods eaten such as apple pies, turkey and stuffing.(Did I mention calorie laden, never mind, just enjoy…)

You may be having out-of town visitors to be staying with you.  Here are some ideas to make sure their stay is enjoyable.

How To Set Up a Welcoming Guest Room

* Think about who is most likely touse the room and determine the beds you’ll need. A queen is good for couples, but if you don’t have the room, consider twins, a daybed, or a trundle bed.

* Supply proper beddingfor the season: lightweight blankets and sheets in thesummer, and jersey or flannel sheets in the winter, plus extra blankets and a throw.

* Stock the closet with a variety of bed pillows — soft, hard, flat, fluffy, down, synthetic — so guests can choose the one that’s most comfortable for them.

* Always include an alarm clock and reading lamp, and make room for a bedside table or nightstand to rest them on.

* Make sure guests have a place to store clothes and empty luggage.

* Pay attention to window treatments and how light enters the room at different times of the day.

* Add a re-fillable carafe for middle of the night thirst quenching.

* Add night lights to direct your guests to the bathroom.

* Supply a basket of travel size lotions and soaps.

* Lay out towels including bath, hand and wash cloths.
