Of all of the design elements, lighting is one of, it not the most important ones yet it is easily and often overlooked. You can have a fabulous room that looks a lot less than fabulous if it is not lit properly. The same holds true in the opposite direction. You can have an average looking space that looks phenomenal if the lighting is done right. The key is layering the light in each room; overhead, task, accent, ambient.
Family room activities range from watching TV, playing games, reading, relaxing or entertaining. Too often this room in the house will only have an overhead ceiling fan with a light kit, or recessed cans. You must have
‘eye level’ lighting. Is there a chair that you like to read in? If so, make sure there is a floor or table lamp nearby to give you proper task lighting. Make sure lighting is on dimmer switches to avoid glare effects . Ambient lighting is also important when you are using the room to entertain in.
