VELVET. The word itself evokes thoughts of ‘luxury’.
Here is the official history of velvet:
Velvet and Cashmere wool originated in Kashmir. Traditionally, velvet is associated with nobility. Velvet was introduced to Baghdad during the rule of Harun al-Rashid by Kashmiri merchants and to Al-Andalus by Ziryab. In the Mamluk era, Cairo was the world’s largest producer of Velvet.
While velvet is a commonly used fabric for clothing, we will ‘talk about it’ in terms of how it is used for interior design purposes.
This velvet fabric would look fabulous on an upholstered chair or perhaps used for throw pillows on an ivory colored sofa.
How about on an upholstered headboard with nail head trim detail. Can you see it?
Velvet is a sturdy fabric that is well suited for upholstery. It can be used in Hollywood Glam style decor such as this custom headboard S Interior Design had made for a client’s guest bedroom suite, but Velvet fabric transcends specific design styles and is just as wonderful when it is used in contemporary design settings as it is in traditional ones.
You can find velvet upholstered furniture easily including West Elm,
Crate and Barrel, and Drexel Heritage to name a few.
The next time you are shopping for upholstered furniture, an upholstered headboard, or even for throw pillows or bedding, consider VELVET as an option.
Just skip the ‘velvet paintings’ that were popular for an unfortunate time frame in the 1960s!
