Stay Home & Travel the World

April 12, 2012 by Suzanne Lasky

Summer is fast approaching and some of you may have already made great vacation plans.  Maybe local, maybe a short drive or perhaps a long dreamed about vacation out of country.

Unfortunately not all of us can be world travelers.  However, you can bring the feel of another country to your home with some well chosen furnishings and accessories.  It can be

An accent piece of furniture,
A new accessory or artwork for your walls,
Even lighting or fabrics can tell a tale of far away places

So travel a bit even if it means never getting on air plane.  Create the feel of the location you wish to visit in your home and you can mentally go there every day.

Transformational Interior Design

September 22, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky

Design is a process.  Candace Olsen said ‘Good Design Takes Time’.  It is true!  Sometimes you can make a notable change to the interior design of  a space pretty quickly, but often the design plan needs to be developed, executed and adjusted to get it just right.  So, while we all are trained to get everything quickly, I call it the ‘microwave society syndrome’, take a deep breath and invest time into the planning process to get the best end result.

Below is a recent example of a project S Interior Design is working on.    You will see from the before and after photos the room has undergone a transformation.  New paint colors, new seating, accent tables, area rugs, window treatments and more.  Perhaps most different design element is the fireplace.  The fireplace is a focal point in the room and before it had a faux paint technique in muddy brown tones that read as ‘Tuscon’.  The new homeowners, wanted to inject color and an ethnic style element into the design.  First we painted it, then we chose tiles to place on the hearth and the surround.

Interior Design A-Z: ‘K’ is for Kilim

July 21, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky

Personally I have a love/hate relationship with Kilim.  Love it for rugs (don’t forget your rug pad, they will slip!),  Love it for footstool covers,  Love it for wall hangings.  Not so sure about for pillow covers.  Why?  Because while they look good, and are textural, often colorful  and interesting to look at, they are NOT face-friendly.

So please proceed to use Kilim pillow covers for the seating that you only sit on, or look at, but don’t use it for the sectional sofa you lie all over at night to watch your favorite TV shows.  For detailed information about Kilim please click on the Wikipedia definition.   I promise you will learn more than you thought possible about Kilims; I know I did.

A Bit of Morrocan Design

June 17, 2010 by Suzanne Lasky

I love Moroccan design elements.  They have great color, detail and a ‘air of mystery’ about them.  I am going to propose stenciling/drawing a large Moroccan  motif on the ceiling of a dining room.  The walls are a green tone, the ceiling a cinnamon tone.  If the stencil is done in rich blues, golds, deep greens and black it will be a true ‘statement’
