2021 Design Color and Materials

December 28, 2020 by Suzanne Lasky

Every year Sherwin Williams presents the color palettes they feel will be relevant in the coming year. They compile vast amounts of research to present the underlying environmental components that are contributing to the color palettes’ appeal. Below is a snippit of some of those trends for your consideration.

INFLUENCES

S Interior Design had written a post about Interior Design Trends and Biophilic Design was featured as Trend 1 in the post. Take a read to learn more!

Related to Biophilic Design in our opinion is getting design inspiration from Organic Elements; those found in nature.

Not at all surprising given the reality of our world this year, Security both physical and emotional are paramount concerns that manifest in color choices that make us feel more secure.

Again related to the unsettled anxiety of our status right now, we want to re-visit times when we felt more secure and safe. However, we do inject the nostalgic design with a modern current over tone to feel current.

Here are the four paint color trend categories from S.W.

As always, S Interior Design will suggest that regardless of trends that you use the colors and materials in your homes that work best for your personal styles and preferences.

We are looking forward to helping you all realize your interior design dreams in 2021!!

June 5, 2018 by Suzanne Lasky

While this is not new ‘news’  it is a concise summary of the key steps a home seller should be considering when placing their home on the market to sell.  Selling and buying a home is an emotional process.  Sometimes it is challenging for you the seller who has lived in a home for many years to emotionally disconnect and view the home from an objective vantage point.

I will add two more important tips; one, make sure the exterior of the house is in tip top shape and there is great curb appeal and two, here in Arizona you want to provide a wonderful back patio so people can imagine themselves living the indoor/outdoor lifestyle they desire.

Hiring a professional interior designer or staging company may be money well spent for you to get the price you desire.  See the guest post below for the top tips to get your home in shape prior to being put on the sales market. [Read more…]

Is Sitting in Your Office Making You Sick?

March 22, 2018 by Suzanne Lasky

Below is a guest post on the subject of how sitting at a desk doing office work is potentially doing us harm.  We all are spending increasing amounts of time seated looking at a computer screen for work and for ‘fun’.   The author is recommending the proper desk chair to align our bodies and avoid some of the harmful issues.  I am going to take it a step beyond it and say- GET UP AND GO OUTSIDE EVEN IF IT IS ONLY FOR 5 MINUTES AT A TIME.   Natural light and outdoor air and a quick walk will do wonders —-Oh, and leave your phone inside !

7 Ways Your Office Job Is Destroying Your Body

You love your work and your work loves you back. That would be the most ideal situation, won’t it?  However, even if you love your work – the sedentary posture, stressful working conditions and the long hours you put in could be killing your health and body.

If you are aware and choose to ignore that would entirely be your personal decision. Still, we would recommend you immediately start following a healthy regime for your body sake.

If you are unaware and naive about how your office is destroying your health then you need to be made conscious about it. So here we top 7 ways your office is destroying your body’s physical as well as mental well-being along with possible remedies.

The Biggest – Sitting At Your Desk All Day

The biggest hurt that your body sustains every day is the prolonged sitting work. These lengthy periods of sitting posture is a terrible thing for your body with aches and pains being common.

These seemingly normal pains and aches is a reason that could lead to an early death. Other risks of lengthy sitting periods could lead to muscular skeletal disorders, obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and more. Even regular work out isn’t a remedy for this habit.

Furthermore is slouching which is even worse

Are you sitting all day long in front of a device in a slouching posture? And you aren’t bothered to straighten it? Well then you are inviting pool of chronic, long-term ailments — including arthritis and bursitis.

Chances Of Physical Hurt Are High

A treadmill desk is a great way to avoid the risk of obesity and heart disease. And if you have one then you could also be prone to a lot of typos while typing. Also, you might also tend to fall often, more than your sit on a chair. So you need to choose your working accessories carefully, especially chairs like the  cheap office chairs Singapore  and ensure they do more help than harm.

Way too much light while working

Exposure to over-illumination while working is roots to many eye related woes, most common being headaches often even every day. Scientifically over-illumination is taken as total darkness by our bodies. This messes massively with our body’s internal clocks starting increased fatigue, stress, high blood pressure and an increased risk of certain carcinomas.

Bad air quality in your building

There’s a term called “Sick Building Syndrome” which could be affecting your health.  This syndrome deals with the quality of air circulating inside your building which can be can be up to 100 times dirtier than outside.

Besides, the dirt the air is also contaminated with unhealthy gases and chemicals. You unknowingly fight the menace of pollutants in the air conditioning and toxic particles. If that was all you have absolutely no idea that there are also dangerous bacteria and mold around and more common in for a buildings that isn’t well kept.

Over-exposure to printers and photocopiers

If the filter of Photocopiers isn’t changed regularly it can be the source to deadly ozone and even small amounts can cause chest pain and irritation. In fact, even the laser printers can harm your health with the toner particles that can affect your lungs and blood stream. This in turn could be the reason for lung disease and other ailments.

Working for over 10 hours per day

According to European researchers people working 10 hours or more every day have a “60 percent greater risk of a multitude of cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and angina.”

Endlessly staring at a computer screen

Yes, computer screens don’t give off radiation. But the strain that eyes incur from staring over long periods of time can be detrimental for your vision and eyes. In addition you could also experience headaches and migraines often.

Interior design trends 2016: Use of natural materials and tones

February 24, 2016 by Suzanne Lasky

Below is a well written article on what is trending for interior design in 2016 (at least so far).  S Interior Design is thrilled to know that natural, organic design materials are popular since we have always incorporated those design elements in our design work whenever it made design sense for the individual client we were working with.  Interestingly the push to gold and brass metal finishes is still being high lighted.  We have found that most of our clientele are not open to incorporating these finishes in their homes.

Every year sees a new set of trends; the colors and materials of last year are now history and it is time to make way for the interior design trends of 2016:

Materials
Copper was the metal of 2015 but the enthusiasm for this is now waning. Interior design will now favor a more opulent approach, gold, brass and precious stones; particularly those with a blue hue will be in demand. The main reason behind this is the warming effect that gold and brass can have on any space; as well as adding a touch of affluence. These materials can be introduced as accessories, gold trays, edged mirrors and even a brass light fitting. To some extent the gold and precious metals themes can be seen as a throwback to the seventies, opulence, decadence and over-indulgence were key and will be displayed in houses again over the coming year.

In addition it will be essential to have more natural materials, such as hand crafted pieces, these will generally be items which are made locally and show that you support both the environment and your local community. They will also be excellent conversation starters. Other materials to be brought into your home are plants. The theme of bringing the outdoors inside was present in 2015 and will continue to be in 2016.

Color
The general consensus for 2016 is to utilize dusty pinks with natural colors. Every room should be limited to beige, tan and other natural colors. Wood finish could even make a comeback with a variety of wooden floors and ornamental pieces being hand crafted from wood. This would be a great way of combining both materials and color to create an artistic flare.
Marble and other natural finishes should also add to the color palette of any room; it provides a simple, understated and elegant look. The emphasis will be on bringing natural elements into your home. An alternative to this is to embrace the Bohemian look, bold floral cushions and rugs can mix with tribal images and painted furniture to create a vibrant, colorful and cheerful atmosphere.

Textures and Patterns
Geometric designs, including 3D, stripes and even blocks will be a very strong influence in the coming year. The emphasis will be on a textured design which is symmetrical and inviting. It should be possible to lose yourself in a back-splash or rug as you become immersed in the design and style. There will even be room for floral displays and themed rooms, such as a jungle collection where everything feels like it is coming to life. Splashes of color will offer balance against neutral and simplistic furniture pieces.

All eyes on handmade furniture
Individuality is fundamental this season when it comes to home furniture. Exquisite personal customization and handmade pieces have gotten a lot of attention lately. Custom furniture looks exclusive; it is made of top-quality materials and it is crafted after the personal preferences of the buyer. Glass coffee tables with hidden compartments, bespoke nightstands with different purposes and foldable beds to make space are just some pieces you should look after this season. In terms of material, hardwood still rules the market. The pieces are long-lasting; they’re attentively crafted and timeless which means they fit in every type of décor.

Design of the room
The advancement of social media has thrust perfectly presented rooms into the hands of millions of people around the world. This has meant an increase in people wanting the showroom feel. This will be achieved by simple lines and minimal clutter. Features and ornaments are likely to be clustered together to create a focal point and a talking point. There will also be an increase in natural products which reflects the increasing concern regarding the environment. There will also be an increased focus on designing rooms which feel warm and inviting. A simply designed room with a homely space for gathering can be finished to perfection with a mild pastel wall and a touch of the luxury in simple gold, brass or precious metal ornaments.

There is also likely to be an increase in the themed room, whether this is a black and white feel, an exotic beach paradise or a gamekeeper’s cottage. These rooms will be complemented by the use of recycled materials and create a small taste of paradise for the owner.
